First presentation to UCD Philosophy colleagues on January 27th
Shortly after arriving from Japan and 30 minutes after moving into a new apartment, I went to Ardmore House for a research seminar. This gave me an opportunity to introduce myself and my work to my new colleagues at UCD’s School of Philosophy.
The title was ““The Kyoto School as Comparative Political Thought: Ways forward after Seven Decades of a Dialogue of the Deaf.” The presentation slides can be read on academia.edu.
Michiko Yusa on “Affirmation via Negation: Zen, Philosophy of Life, Sexual Desire, and Infinite Love”, 19th December 2016
I invited Professor Michiko Yusa to speak in Temple University Japan’s Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies public lecture series and introduced her lecture. You can read about the event here and watch the video of it here.
Although it was late in the year and teaching had ended, the turnout out was good. I was particularly pleased to see a number of my students in the audience.
European Research Day at the EU Delegation in Tokyo, 25th November 2016
I was selected to speak at the annual European Research Day organized by EURAXESS and hosted by the EU Delegation at Europa House in Minami Azabu. The title of my talk was “The Politics of and around the Kyoto School: Beyond ‘Questionable Footnotes’ and ‘Japanese-style Fascism’ to Comparative Political Philosophy.” However, as requested by EURAXESS, it was one third about my own research and two thirds reflections on my experience as a European academic in Japan. The report and my slides are available on the EURAXESS website.
